Prestigious
Canadian golf event returns to Ontario for the first time
since 2003
The 2007 TELUS Skins Game will
return to Ontario for the first time since 2003, and to mark
the occasion, the popular Canadian summer golf event will
visit the widely acclaimed new golf course, The Raven Golf
Club at Lora Bay, located fifteen minutes from Collingwood
and the Village at Blue Mountain, June 17-19.
“Ontario’s outdoor recreation
capital will serve as the host of this year’s TELUS Skins
Game, and we are proud to be associated with this elite
event,” said Steve Podborski, director of TELUS Sport
Marketing. “We are excited about bringing some of the
biggest names in golf to Ontario to help celebrate the TELUS
Skins Game with Canadian golf fans.”
The TELUS Skins Game is a
highlight of the Canadian summer sporting schedule. The
intimate, relaxed setting of the Skins Game format allows
players to engage with the cameras and the crowds as they
compete against each other for pride and prize money. This
year’s event will celebrate a world theme, with each of the
players representing different home countries.
“Each year, TELUS partners
with a charitable organization that aligns with TELUS’ goal
of making the future friendly for Canada’s youth,” said
Podborski. “We are proud to announce that the 2007 TELUS
Skins Game charity partner will be the Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation (JDRF). This organization is the
leading charitable funder and advocate of Type 1 diabetes
research worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure
for diabetes and its complications through the support of
research.”
“We are delighted to be
selected as this year’s TELUS Skins Game charity designate,”
said Josée Goulet. “It is through the generous support of
organizations like TELUS that the Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation can continue is important research in a search
for a cure for Type 1 diabetes.”
The Raven at Lora Bay’s
7,200 yard championship layout, co-designed by PGA Tour
Professional Tom Lehman and Canadian golf course architect
Thomas McBroom, was recently named to Travel & Leisure
Magazine’s list of the Best New Golf Courses in 2006.
The TELUS Skins Game
participants, as well as event ticket information, will be
announced in the coming months. Over the years, the lineup
has included many of the biggest names in the game including
Jack Nicklaus, Sergio Garcia and last year’s champion, John
Daly.

The first 6 holes are valued at
$15,000 each. The stakes rise to $20,000 per hole on the next
six and peak on holes 13 through 18 with $25,000 per hole at
stake. In the case of a
tie on a hole, the prize money is carried over and added to
the next hole's prize purse. The 'winner-take-all' nature of
the competition often leads to incredible pressure on the
competitors and a great deal of excitement for both spectators
and the TV audience watching at home. This Skins Game will be
covered live on both TSN and RDS (French).
All four players and their
caddies will be equipped with wireless microphones, enabling
the audience to enjoy the interplay and good natured humour
that is a trademark of Skins Game competitions.
The real winner in this
format is the TV audience who gets a rare insight into the
personalities of these great competitors. Away from the
pressure of PGA Tour tournament play, the players can relax a
little more and play spectacular golf for their Canadian fans.
The Skins Game is a global
golf property. IMG Canada sells the Skins Game around the
world for broadcast. Countries that have carried the Canadian
Skins Game include:
- Australia
- France
- Korea
- Thailand
- Great Britain
- Saudi Arabia
- USA
Golf is one of the fastest
growing sports in Canada and Canada boasts the highest per
capita golf participation in the world at 19.4% (the US rate
is 14.1%).
There are in excess of 5
million golfers in Canada, playing on well over 2,000 golf
courses. The number of players is increasing by about 10 to 12
per cent every year, according to the Canadian Golf
Foundation, while the number of courses is growing by seven to
eight per cent annually.

Orr Lake Golf Club is
graced with large numbers of mature trees and natural
fliage, which line most of the course's fairways.
Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards make
it challenging for a strong hitter, yet very playable for
those without power. Orr Lake's course can be a lot of fun
for company golf tournaments or a family outing.
|
|
The front nine is more
mature and tighter than the back nine. Toughest hole on
the course may be the 600 yard, par 5, 6th hole. The
numerous sand traps can make you play a few more strokes
than usual. The 2nd hole, with its spectacular setting has
cost many a golfer more than their fair share of golf
balls. The back nine opened in 2000 and has long wide open
fairways and some very large greens. |
