It's a family affair at Boston Pizza Collingwood

Restaurant opening creates more than 100 new jobs

Collingwood, ON, November 24, 2006 - Boston Pizza International Inc., Canada's No. 1 casual dining chain, announces the grand opening of its first restaurant and sports bar in Collingwood, Ontario at 390 First Street on Tuesday, November 28, 2006. The opening creates 100 new jobs in the community and offers a great new casual dining alternative to this busy tourist destination.

The new restaurant is owned and operated by husband and wife franchisee team, Alex and Sandy Smardenka, part-time residents of Collingwood for the past 18 years. Their son Phil will serve as manager of the Collingwood location. Alex brings a wealth of restaurant experience to Boston Pizza Collingwood with more than 30 years in the business.

"We love Collingwood and we're so excited to offer a new casual dining choice to local residents," says Alex Smardenka. "Boston Pizza strives to provide great food and exceptional service to our guests each and every time they visit."

Boston Pizza offers two experiences under one roof - a family-friendly dining room and an entertaining sports bar. Boston Pizza Collingwood is decorated with a local flare featuring Collingwood Blues jerseys and photos from the town throughout the years.

In keeping with their commitment to the community, the staff of Boston Pizza Collingwood will donate their tips generated through six ‘dress rehearsals' to local Collingwood charity My Friend's House with a cheque presentation made at the grand opening party on Saturday, November 25th.  The restaurant will be an active member of the community year-round and will support local schools, minor sports leagues and charities.

Guests can choose from 100 menu items including gourmet pizzas and pasta, ribs, sandwiches, salads, entrées and desserts.  Boston Pizza is open late seven days a week and serves the full menu until close.

Boston Pizza International Inc. is Canada's No. 1 casual dining brand with more than 250 restaurants in Canada and annual sales in excess of $550 million.  The company has been recognized as one of Canada's 50 Best Managed Companies since 1993.  Boston Pizza International Inc. is headquartered in Richmond, B.C., and has regional offices in Mississauga, Ontario, and Laval, Quebec, to support its expansion.  For more information, visit www.bostonpizza.com.

Cafe' Charteuse

Ruth and Patrick Bourachot would like to welcome you to our Café Chartreuse.

We bring with us a combined experience of over 50 years in the hospitality industry: we have travelled across Canada, lived and worked in many provinces. Patrick, the Executive Chef, was born and raised in France (from the Sarthe region) and did all his schooling and apprenticing there as well. Ruth is a Canadian, born in Maple, Ontario just North of Toronto.

After learning all about Canada and what it has to offer, we have decided to bring a European Café to the beautiful resort town of Collingwood, on the shores of Georgian Bay and minutes away from the slopes of Blue Mountain. Here is where we put forth everything we like and enjoy, and would like to invite all of you to come in and enjoy it with us. 705.444.0099 70 Hurontario Street Collingwood, ON, L9Y 2L6

Georgian Manor Resort

THE GEORGIAN MANOR RESORT & COUNTRY CLUB

Nestled between the clean, clear waters of Georgian Bay, and the challenging slopes of Blue Mountain (Ontario’s largest downhill ski resort), Collingwood's Georgian Manor Resort has become the benchmark by which service and quality are measured in the Georgian Triangle.

We provide personal attention and cuisine that other resorts can't. We're a country resort, but we cater to a very sophisticated, very urbane market.

In just over three years of ownership of The Manor, as it has become known, we have rebuilt and renovated our existing inventory of hotel rooms and Members’ suites and condominiums, added a new outdoor pool, tennis courts, a children's playground, a state-of-the-art workout room, a new arcade and games room and Superstition Golf, a spectacularly landscaped 18-hole professional family putting course.

In terms of vacation ownership, Memberships at The Georgian Manor Resort & Country Club have become the envy of private resort travel clubs throughout North America. The Manor challenges its guests with a 365-day spectrum of rigorous joy: golfing, skiing, fishing, hiking, ATVing, sailing and snowmobiling.

Just 90 minutes north of Toronto, your personal sanctuary in Ontario's four-season holiday wonderland awaits. On the nearby Niagara Escarpment, an abundance of wildlife watches the passing parade of outdoor adventurers: hikers, bikers, snowmobilers, dog sledders and skiers.

In winter, horse-drawn sleighs take their passengers through some of Ontario's most majestic trails and forests.

In summer, on Georgian Bay, considered by many to offer the best fresh water sailing in the world, windsurfers compete with sailing yachts for summer breezes, while anglers quietly sneak into their favourite trout and salmon streams.

Welcome to the world of the Georgian Manor Resort & Country Club.

Collingwood Places to Eat

Collingwood Places to Shop

 Collingwood is a Premier Ranked Tourist Destination located on the southern shore of Georgian Bay and at the foot of Ontario's highest ski hill, Blue Mountain, in the heart of one of Ontario's most attractive year-round recreation and tourist destinations.

In the year 2000 the area was the topic of a study by The Ontario Ministry of Tourism and as a result in January 2001 the study was released which was by Malone Give Parsons Ltd. The study region encompassed the south shores of Georgian Bay between Owen Sound and Waubashene, and the major expressions of the Niagara Escarpment, including most of the Beaver Valley. The study is available on the web site www.tourism.gov.on.ca.

The south Georgian Bay region is considered to be clearly positioned among Ontario's premier-ranked tourist destinations. We have captured here some of the quality life style we enjoy.

  • Outdoor recreational pursuits;
  • A diverse mix of successful and outstanding events and festivals
  • A substantial and growing base of recreational/resort oriented condominium properties
  • Cultural heritage resource base;
  • Environmental features definitive of the southern Ontario Landscape and the presence of the Province's best-known trail systems, and its longest beach;
  • Some of Ontario's best heritage exposition sites;
  • Ontario's best skiing, some of its best boating, and one of its best golf resorts;
  • A small but growing and diversifying list of suppliers of sightseeing, interpretive and adventure experiences such as Scenic Caves and Small plane excursions from Collingwood Airport;

Harbourlands Park

was created in 2000 and is one of the most beautiful areas in the community. Residents and visitors alike are enjoying the rugged beauty of a once active shipping/grain storage area. The backdrop of the Collingwood Terminals with its huge white columns rises up from the once wasteland "spit area", now a series of beautifully landscaped walkways and gardens with a history of the area on massive granite plinths. Harbourlands Park offers the ever-changing grandeur and scenic beauty of Georgian Bay for the many people who drive or walk to the Park. There are benches for reflective moments or to watch the quiet beauty of sailboats filling their sails as they make their way out of the historic Collingwood Harbour.

Collingwood Harbour

As the original 'northern terminus' of the railroad, Collingwood was an important shipping port where valuable cargos were loaded and shipped around the Great Lakes. Passenger vessels were also part of the activity at Collingwood harbour and many famous stories are told of the tragedies that befell some of them.
During the Reil Rebellion a military force was raised to quell the disturbance and the Northwest Mounted Police battalion left Collingwood Harbour in 1873 as a part of this force. There is a memorial cairn to mark this historic moment part way along the spit road.

Shipbuilder's Park

This pard has a memorial walkway lined with plaques as a memorial to the many shipyard workers who spent most of their lives building the huge grain carriers, which plied the Great Lakes. Many of the largest were built in Collingwood by these men, whose work is remembered by their families and other donors who have purchased memorial plaques with the names of the ships such as the Hochelaga, Black Bay and others built nearby at the famous Collingwood Shipyards which ceased operation in 1986 after 100 years or operation.

Collingwood Skiff or Watt's Skiff

This skiff was built here in the 1860's by William Watt and his family. Their boat building operation was known in Collingwood of over 135 years. This widely used two-ended sailing ship was prized by fishermen and others for its reliability in the rough and unpredictable waters of Georgian Bay. A fascinating book about the Watt's Skiff is available at the Collingwood Museum. Those interested in actually seeing a Watt's Skiff can view an original boat that was donated to the Collingwood Museum or actually see a brand-new replica built in 1999, which plies the waters around Collingwood as a training ship for young sailors.

Historic Homes

Admire the cluster of homes along 3rd Street.

Third Street is the Fifth Avenue of the Town" including Tornaveen (1893), now the Collingwood Ski Academy, Armadale, #375 (1890), the site of a gala reception for the Governor General of Canada in June, 1918 and Elmwood/Dundurn Hall at #241 which was once described as "the finest building in the town". If you continue walking toward the east, you'll pass by houses with names such as The B.C. Cottage at #147, the Charles Pitt House, #242, a lovely Greek revival home, boasting magnificent stone columns in the ionic order, Stewart Villa #217 (1883) followed closely by two other architectural beauties Thurso, #37 (now Christopher's Restaurant) and The Beild, a lovely Eden Smith House dating to 1909 which is now a delightful Country Inn.

Collingwood Federal Building (1914)

Constructed of marble and recently restored, it was inspired by the State Finance Building in Havana, Cuba and boasts a rotunda with a large stained glass dome, bearing the coats of arms of the four levels of government, including the Town of Collingwood - An outstanding focal point and well worth the visit. The building is open to the public during business hours.

Murals - Side Launch

Murals of Collingwood's historical highlights are springing up in the Town and none is more dramatic than the Side Launch mural, painted by John Hood and his sister Alexandra Hood, depicting the practice of launching ships in Collingwood.

Millennium Park

The Collingwood Millennium Overlook Park is located at the land's end, the most northerly point of the historic Collingwood Harbour. The site provides an outstanding panorama of Georgian Bay and the Niagara Escarpment to the west. Georgian Bay (technically part of Lake Huron) was named La Mer Douce by Champlain in 1615 on his first visit to the bay. It is one 120 miles long and 50 miles wide. The Niagara Escarpment was declared as a World Biosphere Reserve, an internationally recognized ecosystem. The Millennium Outlook Park is strategically located to provide visitors with the opportunity to learn about and experience both of these features.

Walking Tours

The Collingwood & District Historical Society Walk

The Collingwood & District Historical Society was formed to provide a forum for people interested in the history of the area. Regular meetings are held, six or seven times a year, where speakers present subjects of local historical interest. The bi-annual tour of historical homes is a major fundraiser for the Society.
The tour visits a variety of historical buildings around the town, or you could guide yourself on a walking tour of the town and it's historical buildings using materials that you can pick up at the Collingwood Museum.
See the above insert on Historic Homes for more information on the historical buildings of Collingwood. Contact the Georgian Triangle Tourist Association for a "Walking Tour of Collingwood" brochure and map.

Lighthouse Island  A Local Landmark!

The lighthouse, constructed in 1855-59, is one of the most historic structures of the Great Lakes! Visible from the shores of Collingwood, the island itself is called Nottawasaga Island. Locals call it Clarks Island or even Lighthouse Island. The imposing limestone lighthouse soars 86 feet and serves as one of the few reminders of our bold and diverse marine heritage. The light served Collingwoods once busy port as a guide for mariners around treacherous shoals and through sudden Georgian Bay gales. Maintained by 13 men and their families over 124 years of operation, the island is now home to hundreds of nesting migratory birds.

Collingwood Terminals

This imposing structure can be seen for miles around Collingwood and symbolizes the twin engines of commerce in the early 1900s, agriculture and shipping. In 1899, the Collingwood Council identified the need to erect a Modern elevator, but due to low water levels, construction was delayed until 1929, when the Federal government agreed to pay for dredging. The two million bushel grain elevator has bins 100 feet high and 22 feet in diameter. The steamer MUNISING arrived in September 1929 with 228,000 bushels of American grain, the first shipment for this important new structure, the third grain elevator in Collingwoods growing economy. Grain service stopped in 1993, ending 64 years of operation for the cement elevator and 123 years of grain trade in Collingwood. The terminals, now owned by the Town of Collingwood continue as a modern day landmark and will be an important part of the future redevelopment of Collingwood Harbour.

Events

Collingwood Horse Show

The Collingwood Horse Show has been a part of our community since 1986. It has grown in size and reputation since its inception and as a result has increased the profile of our community. The show now encompasses two weeks and two shows: The Festival, third week of August and The Classic, last week of August.
In 1999, horse show organizers and Bayridge Development hired a general manager who took on all the duties and responsibilities of the entire event with the exception of the regular maintenance of Fisher Field prior to the event. In 2000, event organizers have returned to their original management formula. Collingwood Horse Show Chair Jay Hayes and his team, including his wife Shawn, daughter Ainsley, Kara McIntosh, Valerie Chapman, Cindy Fisher and Jennifer Rogers were responsible for the day to day operations of the show.
In the past, the goods and services the horse show has received through the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture have been negotiated between Mr. Hayes and Mr. Dunbar. The 2000 Collingwood Horse Show was a success despite the unseasonable weather conditions. Heavy rain cancelled some events and made riding dangerous at other times. However, Collingwood was introduced to Canadas Sydney 2000 Olympic Team. The resulting publicity surrounding rider Eric Lamazes disqualification from the team and the Olympics continued to keep the Collingwood Horse Show in the spotlight after the conclusion of the show.

Elvis Festival

The Collingwood Elvis Festival is a celebration of all aspects of life and music of Elvis Presley. In its sixth year, the 2000 festival took place Friday, July 28th through to Monday, July 31st.
The year 2000 proved to be the most successful yet. A new team at the reins did an outstanding job. The Friday Night Street Dance was the largest yet. Organizers and the Municipal Events Facilitator worked with the OPP, Fire Department and the LCBO to license the entire street, from store front to store front. With all the extra space, it still seemed crowded. The installation of a power source at the side of the arena allowed much easier access to power and meant the arena did not have to be open for power cords etc. Some electrical upgrades at the Collingwood Curling Club provided better access to power. Saturday and Sunday nights at the Curling Club were a great success. As usual, the club was filled to capacity. There was some concern expressed by the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department about over capacity. These have been addressed with event organizers. The Sunday morning Gospel Service was wonderful despite forced prevention of the choir attending. All the partners involved in presenting this event worked very hard. The Collingwood Elvis Festival offers all of these attractions at various costs for the participant. Therefore, the festival can and does involve people from various economic backgrounds.
Sponsorship of this event is good. Molsons and The New VR in addition to the Town of Collingwood are the most visible. Local community organizations also get involved during the festival. Website:
